As serial computing performance gains have diminished, there has been a resurgence of interest in parallel computation. For some problems, parallel systems can achieve near linear performance gains; for others, however, the gains are much more modest. In this paper, we focus on factors that limit parallel performance gains, and also highlight a number of myths and misconceptions that have led to errors in the published literature, and vastly inflated performance expectations.
