RASSP: Changing the Paradigm of Electronic-System Design

RASSP is a DoD program to develop a process that meets four ambitious goals. Over the four year life of this ARPA/Tri-Service project, the cost and development time of producing military embedded digital signal processors is to be reduced by a factor of four (4X). At the same time the program is to provide for at least a 4X lowering of life cycle costs for the development of signal processors. A team consisting of Sanders, Motorola, Hughes Aircraft Company, and ISX has been working for two years towards meeting these objectives. This article summarizes the technical approach that is being used and provides measures, using real systems developments, of progress that has been made.
