The hardware and software communities have reviewed VHDL extensively throughout its conception and development. This followsthe 1970s example set during development of the Ada programming language. Analysis of language, like one's preference in clothing,is subjective. Nevertheless, an informed consensus acknowledges VHDL as having good aspects, deficient aspects, and controversialaspects. Additionally, VHDL has been criticized for lack of facilities outside the language contract's defined work scope;some criticisms have centered on the software support environment?particularly the simulator. We will present both positiveand negative commentary made about VHDL, concentrating on issues associated only with the language. Comments and opinionspresented here come from many sources, and are not necessarily those of our affiliated organizations.
