The era of data-intensive sciences puts high technology requirements increasingly hard to fulfill by the existing data management and analysis tools. We present the data vault, a new approach to open up scientific file repositories for exploration and analysis by the means of modern database management systems facilities. The design space for data vaults is characterized by requirements coming from various scientific fields presented with several use cases. The data vault is implemented in the context of MonetDB, open-source column store for analytic applications.
