The US Department of Defense is reducing its dependence on the traditional "design, build, break, and fix" paradigm for designing and testing weapons systems by supplementing empirical testing with computational science and engineering. This introduction to the theme issue explores how the DoD's computational systems have contributed to various scientific works.
