The specification of generic data objects, or bricks, for the ocean data community is presented. These bricks were defined based on commonalities across many data types used in ocean environmental research. Once defined, a data exchange structure was developed in an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) environment. The data objects are presented and the structure applicable to one-dimensional data (e.g., ocean profile data) is described.
