Sun Ships New Version of Java
According to Sun Microsystems, Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 is the most significant upgrade to the Java platform and language in nearly a decade. Generics, enumerated types, metadata, and autoboxing of primitive types are all improvements designed to speed up coding.

Microsoft Betas Visual Studio 2005
Visual Studio 2005 is Microsoft's new tool for building Windows, Web, or mobile business applications. Designed for occasional developers working in small organizations, it maintains the simplicity of the Visual Studio Express products but delivers access to features for building data-driven smart clients and Web applications. Visual Studio 2005 also helps ease migration to the .NET framework.

Developer Suite from PalmSource
PalmSource has released Palm OS Developer Suite 1.0, a software package designed to help create multimedia and wireless applications for ARM- and 68 Kbytes-based Palm devices. It includes an open source IDE based on Eclipse, originally developed by IBM. Eclipse is a commercial-quality IDE with hundreds of plug-in tools that support languages such as C++, Java, and Cobol.

Xilinx Simplifies Embedded Processing Design
Platform Studio 6.3i from Xilinx simplifies system-level embedded processing design on Xilinx FPGAs including the MicroBlaze and immersed PowerPC cores. The tool automates architecture-level design steps and offers a new software environment based on the Eclipse IDE.
