ABSTRACT

Although the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry's investments in computer technology development are well known, the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) also played an important role. A study of the development of NTT's information system called DIPS reveals NTT's influence on the Japanese computer industry and its early effort to promote software engineering in the 1960s.
